You start where every master craftsperson starts — at the material. Before you touch a machine, you learn how wood moves. How moisture content changes dimensional stability. How grain orientation determines strength. How different species — white oak, walnut, maple, cherry, sapele — behave differently under the saw, the router, and the sander. This isn't theory. You learn it by putting your hands on the material and seeing the consequences on real production work.
You progress from hand tools and bench skills through portable power tools into the full industrial machine room: table saw, panel saw, sliding table saw, jointer, thickness planer, shaper, moulder, wide-belt sander, and edge bander. Each machine is taught in context — not as an isolated exercise, but as part of a production sequence on an actual client project. You learn setup, calibration, feed rates, blade and bit selection, dust collection, and maintenance protocols.
You build the full joinery vocabulary — mortise and tenon, dovetail, cope and stick, dado, rabbet, biscuit, pocket screw, dowel, and domino. You learn face-frame and frameless cabinet construction, drawer box assembly, and countertop substrate building. Finishing covers stain application, spray lacquer systems (pre-catalyzed and conversion varnish), UV curing, and quality inspection to AWI (Architectural Woodwork Institute) commercial standards.
By month three, you're not practicing — you're producing. Every piece you build ships to a client site.
CNC is where traditional craft meets modern manufacturing — and where the highest-paid shop floor operators work. Most millwork shops in the Denver market are desperate for competent CNC operators. This training alone makes you employable at a premium wage the day you complete it.
You learn G-code fundamentals — not to write code by hand, but to understand what the machine is doing and why. From there you move into CAM software to create toolpaths for cutting, boring, shaping, pocketing, and profiling operations. You learn the difference between climb and conventional cutting, when to use upcut vs. downcut vs. compression bits, and how feed rates and spindle speeds interact to produce clean cuts without burning, tearout, or chatter.
Sheet goods optimization is where real money is saved or wasted. You learn nesting strategies that maximize yield from 4x8 and 5x10 panels — arranging parts to minimize waste while maintaining grain direction requirements. You set up vacuum hold-down systems, build custom fixtures for odd-shaped parts, perform tool changes mid-program, and troubleshoot common issues: broken bits, material shifting, dimensional drift, and vacuum leaks. By the end, you're running production independently — loading, running, unloading, and inspecting at commercial speed.
This single skill set commands $25–$35/hour in the Denver market. Most shops will hire a competent CNC operator on the spot.
The language of the construction industry is drawings. A craftsperson who cannot read, produce, and coordinate construction documents cannot participate in commercial project delivery. This training closes that gap — completely.
You start by learning to read architectural drawing sets — plans, elevations, sections, details, schedules, and specifications. You learn drawing hierarchy, scale, dimensioning conventions, and how to extract the information you need to build from. Then you produce your own shop drawings: the documents that translate what the architect designed into what the shop can actually fabricate. Floor plans, casework elevations, section details, hardware locations, material callouts, edge profiles, and panel layouts.
You work in AutoCAD for precision 2D drafting — layer management, line weights, object snaps, and multi-sheet drawing organization. SketchUp for rapid 3D modeling and client presentation. And you learn the basics of BIM coordination: how millwork exists within a larger building model alongside mechanical, electrical, and structural systems. You learn to identify spatial conflicts — a duct running through your soffit, a sprinkler head hitting your cabinet — before they become expensive field problems. You prepare submittal packages that architects review and approve.
Design-assist capability is the single biggest differentiator between a commodity subcontractor and a preferred partner. This is how you get invited to the table early.
Fabrication is only half the job. The other half happens on active construction sites — where floors aren't level, walls aren't plumb, dimensions don't match the drawings, and every other trade is working in the same space at the same time. This is where quality is proven or destroyed.
You learn the fundamentals that separate professional installation from "good enough": leveling and shimming to tolerance, scribing fillers and panels to irregular surfaces, templating for countertops and curved elements, and hardware installation that functions perfectly over thousands of cycles. You work with French cleats, Z-clips, blocking, structural fastening, and adhesive systems. You learn which fastener goes into which substrate — wood framing, metal stud, concrete, CMU — and why getting it wrong can bring a wall of cabinets crashing down.
You manage punch lists — walking finished installations with the GC and architect, documenting deficiencies, and returning to close them out. You coordinate installation sequencing with electricians, plumbers, painters, and flooring crews. You handle field RFIs when site conditions don't match drawings. And you do all of this while representing the company professionally — communicating clearly, maintaining a clean work area, and protecting finished work from damage by following trades.
Your installation crew is the last trade the client sees. The quality of your field work is the quality of the entire project in the client's memory.
This is what separates a technician from a business professional. A craftsperson who can build but can't estimate, schedule, or manage client relationships will always work for someone who can. This training makes sure that someone is you.
You learn to estimate millwork projects from construction documents — reading Division 06 specifications, performing quantity takeoffs for sheet goods, linear footage, hardware counts, and accessory items. You calculate labor hours using real production rates from actual projects. You learn overhead allocation, the difference between markup and margin (and why confusing them kills companies), and how to assemble bid packages — scope letters, exclusion lists, unit pricing, and alternates — in the format GCs expect and trust.
You build production schedules that account for material lead times, shop capacity, and field installation sequencing. You track budgets against actual costs — labor, material, subcontractor — and learn to identify variances before they become losses. You manage material procurement from vendor networks, negotiate pricing, and track deliveries. On the client side, you learn to write proposals, manage change orders, run progress meetings, and communicate project status to stakeholders who don't speak millwork.
A project manager who came up through the shop — who understands material, labor, and process from the inside — is worth more than an MBA who's never touched a saw. You'll have both.
Safety isn't a module you complete and forget. It's embedded in everything you do from day one — in the shop, on the job site, and in every interaction with equipment, materials, and other people. The Journey treats safety as a culture, not a checkbox.
You earn OSHA 10-Hour and OSHA 30-Hour certifications — the industry standard credentials that every commercial job site requires. You learn proper PPE selection and usage, tool-specific lockout/tagout procedures, dust collection and respiratory protection, fall protection systems, electrical safety, material handling and ergonomics, and emergency response protocols. Every piece of equipment in the shop has a dedicated safety training sequence that you complete and demonstrate proficiency in before you're cleared to operate independently.
